Pros and Cons of Traditional Art and Digital Art

By: Abigail Abueva

Many prefer to draw traditionally compared to digitally, and vice versa. It's important to know the pros and cons of each and to know which one fits you as a person. Personally, I enjoy both! However digital art programs are very nice and convenient to use.

Of course, the programs you use may be a factor in what you can create online. It's best to know about the different types of programs offered online and their pros and cons

Pros and Cons of Digital Art

Pros: Wide range of useful tools, programs, brushes, easy to make corrections, saves a lot of time, generates less waste, and it's an industry standard for certain jobs

Cons: Can be expensive, can take getting used to, technical difficulties, can strain your eyes, less experience in blending, doesn't feel the same as drawing traditionally

Personally, I enjoy drawing digitally. Lately however there is an issue with AI art and it can pose a problem for us digital artists. Digital art can save resources as well.

Pros and Cons of Traditional Art

Pros: Wide range of tools, nice feeling, less strain on your eyes, art is on paper so you can't lose files easily
Cons: Depending on the piece it can take longer compared to digital art, tools may be expensive, and hands can get dirty

Typically, most artists start out drawing traditionally and on paper. Clip Studio Paint also did an article on the pros and cons of both traditional art and digital art. You can't lose your files like you may when drawing traditionally.

In the end, it's up to you. Maybe you can use both, or maybe just one. It's good to know the pros and cons of each and how you can draw to the best of your ability.
